First Look Vs. Down the Aisle

I feel so strongly that I am here to capture your special day. Whatever you decide about a first look or down the aisle, your wedding is going to be amazing. There are pros and cons for doing a first look or seeing each other first while walking down the aisle. This is your day together, whatever you decide we will be happy to capture your joy. Here are some things to consider about first look or down the aisle and some alternatives that our couples have done.

First Look:

Some first look advantages can be a beautiful moment for couples. Often couples will read special vows to each other during this alone time. Additionally, it can allow time to take photos with you both before the wedding, allowing more time for you to enjoy your reception. We can get your couple photos done, instead of pulling you away after the ceremony to do those. A big misconception about having a first look; you might feel like it will “take away” from feeling those emotions while you walk down the aisle. In my experience, this is totally not true. As a wedding photographer, I have seen so many tears walking down the aisle. Having a first look just allows you to have a more private moment between just the two of you.

A first look in private can be a great option for the more shy and/or nervous brides or grooms, it allows you to see your person before everyone else. Even if you don’t have a first look, I always recommend scheduling time out of the day for just the 2 of you anyway!

Down the Aisle:

This tradition many couples choose. In addition to the tradition, it allows for a later start in getting ready. When you see each other for the first time down the aisle, you get to share that candid moment with your friends and family.

First Touch:

I have also had couples do a First Touch. This is a moment where you can hold hands, check in with each other, hear each others voice, say a prayer, maybe even say your vows but through a door or around a corner. That way you will see each other for the first time down the aisle but you can still have a private moment for just you two.

First Look with Your Girl Squad:

Doing a first look with your girls in your dress is so fun, whether they've seen it before or not! These reactions are so genuine and I personally love including these in your wedding day.

First Look with Dad:

Brides doing a first look with dad can be so so special, and it is one of the most emotional parts of the day, I swear. So try to leave a little room in there if this is something you’re interested in, or it can be even with your brother or a Dad-like figure -- every family is different. For that person who means a lot to you and has stepped in those shoes, it can always be such an emotional time.

First Look with Mom:

A first look between the groom and his mom can be super special and can make the morning less stressful and nerve-wracking because your mom is there too. She'll love to have that moment to talk to you and before gets to see her son getting married.

As for the bride, doing a first look with mom doesn’t always work out. But do some getting ready shots with mom where she’s doing up your dress -- these are usually pretty special. After the dress is all done if you turn around and give each other a big hug, this is usually when mom gets a little bit emotional seeing you and your dress the first time. You’ll already be in a private area because you’re just finished getting dressed, so this is another thing to consider for your wedding morning.
